Information for students on cybersecurity and cyber hygiene issues

In today's technological environment, it is impossible to imagine everyday life without constant use of the Internet, interaction via social networks, the use of mobile payment systems and digital documents on smartphones. However, such technological capabilities carry serious risks: cybercriminals carry out attacks with the aim of stealing personal information, causing damage to commercial structures, and gaining illegal access to bank accounts. In order to prevent such incidents, it is necessary to have knowledge about protecting your own data and to follow the rules of cyber hygiene and cybersecurity.

In order to inform readers of the regional youth library, students of the Khmelnytsky Polytechnic College of the National University ‘Lviv Polytechnic’ and students of the Khmelnytsky National University about the basic principles of cybersecurity, safe communication on the Internet, personal data protection and confidentiality in conditions of martial law, on 20 November, specialists from the library's Internet centre organised a specialised lecture-training session entitled ‘Cybersecurity: how to protect yourself on the Internet’.

The training event was conducted by Volodymyr Anikin, a lecturer at the Department of Cybersecurity at Khmelnytskyi National University. He provided practical recommendations on protecting personal information in the digital space, in particular, he discussed the reliability of passwords, the concept of entropy, and methods for creating cryptographically secure password combinations.

In addition to the theoretical part, the programme included a demonstration component: participants familiarised themselves with the functionality of various technical equipment, from signal monitoring devices to equipment for blocking them. This practical demonstration allowed participants to alternatively assess information security threats that remain invisible under normal conditions. Each participant received an information leaflet containing the basic rules for ensuring cybersecurity.

Internet users and smart device users need a basic cybersecurity system to protect their personal information, financial data and privacy from criminal groups in cyberspace. The training course was substantive and practical, and participants acquired knowledge that can be applied in their daily activities and aimed at improving information security on the Internet.

We would like to thank the HPC team for their participation, as well as the team at the Khmelnytsky Regional Library for Youth Internet Centre.
